I done did it!

I did it!  I did it, I did it, I DID IT!

I started my tomato plants from seed!



Surely, I dreaded it.  After such a tomato-flop last year, I didn't think I had the skills.  But my frugal-side got the better of me and I just couldn't resist the temptation.  $2.75 for 50 heirloom, organic tomato seeds or $5 per heirloom, organic tomato plant come spring.  So I bit the bullet and ordered the seeds, knowing I still had time to purchase back-ups if the experiment failed.

I knew that in order to work towards my self-sustaining goals, I'd need to learn to not only start all my vegetables from seeds, but also to seed save as well.

Hopefully in the next few years, I will have been able to save seeds from all of our best vegetables and therefore, won't even need to worry about purchasing seeds!  Exception for if I decide to grow a new variety, of course.

I was so excited when my little tomatoes start to come up - I couldn't believe they'd actually germinated!



After a few weeks under some grow lights and placed on a heating pad, the tomato starts had grown quite large.  I eagerly transferred them to their new 4" pot homes, where they will likely remain until the beginning of May, when they will be planted in the garden.

Will all this new room to grow their roots, they're likely to really take off in the next few weeks!  I have also given them a shot of diluted fish emulsion, which provides the starts with lots of nitrogen.  Nitrogen promotes the "green" growth of vegetables (meaning their leaves and such).  Too much nitrogen later on in the growing season means that too much of the plant's energy will go into producing leaves rather than fruit, but for now, that little plant can use the extra boost.

Want to know what the best part is?

When I rub my fingers gently along the tomatoes leaves and then smell my hands, they smell of sweet, summery tomatoes.  Oh, sweet, sweet summer.

Currently, I have 19 tomatoes plants.  That's a lot.  I better give some to my Mom.  Or my friends Jess and Natali, who have proven they are far more talented at growing tomatoes than I.  But I've learned my lessons.  This year, the tomatoes will be placed in a hoop house for the first month, which will provide them with the extra heat boost they need to get going in our short season climate.  I have also moved the tomato bed to the South-West side of the house, which receives quite a bit more sun than the South-East (due to a giant tree than blocks it...grr...).



And on a different garden note, I also took a big risk yesterday and planted all 16 kale plants in the garden.  They have been inside growing strong for about a month now, and were quickly outgrowing their containers.  And while kale likes to be cold and can hold up to a light frost, I still wonder - was it too soon?



So, I decide to nurture the little starts along.  I cut the bottom off of old milk jugs and placed them atop the seedlings.  Then, I pushed the wood chip mulch all up along the sides of the milk jug to help hold the heat in.  The milk jugs will act like a mini-greenhouse (or a poor mans cloche) and will hold the heat and moisture in.  They will also protect the seedlings from freezing temperatures and frost.  In a separate garden bed, where I planted the remainder of the kale, I used mason jars instead.  I, surprisingly, do not always have 16 milk jugs laying around.  I do, however, always have a surplus of mason jars.  Some of the kale will be under the milk jugs in the hoop house, further protecting it from the weather.  The rest of the kale will be protected under mason jars, but not under the hoop house.  I wonder if there will be any difference?



Side-note: The kale has already been hardened off (meaning, I've been moving it outside during the day and inside at night time).  This has given it a chance to get acclimated to outside conditions and temperatures.  Can't just be throwin' your seedlings outside with no preparation, man.

The spinach and cabbages are also finding a daytime home under the hoop house, where they can slowly adjust to life on the outside.

That made it sound like they are being released from prison, didn't it?

When I was finished planting the kale, I came inside with dirty hands and knees, grinning.  Stuart asked me why I was so happy and I instantly replied, When I'm out in the garden, I feel like I'm doing what I was born to do.

And even though scratching in the dirt ruined my manicure, there is nothing like gettin' back in the saddle come spring time.

  1. This post made me happy. So very happy! I have nothing in the garden yet aside from the lovely perennial things that are showing life far ahead of their usual schedule. The weather is a full month ahead here. I wonder if you have ever hear of myfolia.com? It is a free to use garden site. It offers journals, plant profiles, garden tracking etc. The reason I thought you might like to check it out most...seed swapping! Members trade seeds for free with each other all the time. This would allow you to try new varieties in the future by simply swapping seeds you already have or have saved! It is great fun. The site is a huge help for tracking your garden, your harvest, and remembering what succeeded and failed in prior years. If you do check it out and sign up, tell them ElizaK28 sent you. Oh, there are more advanced features available if you would like to pay to help support the sites development (which I do), but there are still fabulous things in the free version!
    Happy gardening!!! BTW, 19 tomato plants isn't too many, but sharing is always wonderful. I think I had 23 last year! After all, you need cherry, grape, and pears for salads; heirloom beefsteaks for sandwiches and raw eating; paste for saucing; a few experiments; and a variety of colors because a colorful plate is a healthy plate. You see my slight insanity in the garden.

  2. Oh, I know what you mean. What I was born to do. Made tears come to my eyes! We are in Phoenix AZ, so the Kale and spinach, lettuce and snow peas are nearing the end of their season. The broccoli and cauliflower is gone to flower/seed (makes the bees so happy! and we've been eating the cabbage. I am mustering my courage to make sauerkraut with the last few heads. All the summer stuff is started or in the ground (well, most of it anyway:) ) and the citrus blossoms fill the night air with a heady scent. Happy gardening! I really enjoy your blog!
