My baby's bottom in a jar.

Georgia's bottom is on my face.

Let me rephrase that:
A baby's bottom is on my face.

Let me try again:
The skin of a baby's bottom is on my face.

And once again:
The skin of my face is like that of a baby's bottom.

Lastly:
My skin is as soft and supple as a baby's bottom.

Phew.  That took me a few tries to get right, but have no fear!  My writing skills never cease to amaze me!  And you, I am sure.

Today is another of my make-at-home favorites.  After dabbling with a few different recipes, I have landed on my favorite skin cream recipe.  So, I decided to share it with you!  So that Georgia's bottom can be on your face as well.  Dangit, there I go again.

Homemade Face Cream
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 3 tablespoons shea butter
- 2-3 drops tea tree oil

And there ya have it.

Mix the coconut oil:

With the shea butter:

With the tea tre oil:

Squish with the back of a spoon to get a nice, frosting-like consistency.

And there you have it.  I store mine in a recycled baby food jar and just keep it in the bathroom cupboard.  Then, after my shower at night, I smear it on my face and neck like it's goin' out of style.

Miraculously, each morning, I wake up with uber-soft skin.  The more I use it, the better it gets!  I only use it once a day, usually at night, and then just splash my face with water in the morning.  It seems to still last on there after that.

In the last year, I've gone from using crazy expensive and toxic facial cleaners (that I had to special order!) - to washing my face with natural, organic Castile Soap - to then also using homemade facial cream!  Can't beat the price (I didn't do the math, but it can't be more than .75 cents per batch) and the ingredients are easy, cheap, and all natural.  That's a win, win, win (just in case you're keeping track).

The best price on coconut oil is available HERE, at Mountain Rose Herbs.
I also get my shea butter from them HERE, which is very inexpensive.
Tea Tree Oil is available at any health food store, but you can also find it HERE.

Please try it.  I beg you.  I plead with you.
Let me know what you think.

And don't be surprised if I enthusiastically start rubbing your face when we run into each other.  I can't help it - I do the same thing to Georgia's lil toosh when she gets out of the tub at night.

I need help.

Have a wonderful weekend, my friends!

  4. Is the tea tree oil just for fragrance?

  5. Lorie,
The tea tree oil is also an antiseptic. It helps with everything from fungus, to acne, to psoriasis, or dandruff. It's a good oil to have in there to help with inflammation, sore patches, dry patches, etc. It's a very useful oil to have around!

  7. Ok, I'm giving this a try. I'm currently spending a small fortune on Arbonne products so 0.75 cents per batch sounds amazing!

    1. Hi Jessilee,

I just was referred to this site, and I happen to use and love Arbonne myself. But yet, the price of this is much more appropriate for our budget at the moment! :-) Have you tried this yet, and how does it compare? Thanks!

  8. I just happened on your website looking for a facial moisturizer. I've used this recipe before and LOVE it! Now I am adding lavender, sandalwood, frankincense and other essential oils that are awesome for your skin. I get more compliments on my complexion now. I have found that you have to be careful what essential oils you put on your face because so many are diluted with other harsh chemicals. I have learned that the FDA only requires 10% of a pure essential oil to be in a bottle to call it 100% pure. THe makers can fill the rest of the bottle with any diluter they wish. I found Young Living Essential Oils to be top quality after long research and trying out multiple essential oils. Their purity and testing lab is far beyond others.

I also wanted to add that just last night for the first time I made whipped shea butter...oh my goodness...you would love it! I added shea butter to a double broiler and then added jojoba and coconut oil. After it melted, I added some cornstarch and mixed. Then I placed to bowl on top of some ice water and as it cooled I added essential oils (heat can kill your essential oils). Then I whipped it on med speed until it began to form peaks like whipped cream. It took about 15-20 mins of whipping but it turned out amazing. I will never buy the stuff again.

Anyway, I've typed way to long but somehow I loved your post about your baby's bottom in a jar and felt compelled to share! =) Have a wonder-filled day. Jordan

  9. Just wondering if you've heard from any readers if this is good for oily, combination, or acne prone skin. I am 33 and have an annoying combination of wrinkles and acne for which I have found NO cream that can tame. I'm not really inclined to slather my face with ingredients using words "oil" and "butter" without hearing a recommendation from another acne prone person. :)

  10. Katrina, I totally have acne prone/oily skin. But what I've found is that adding the right type of moisturizer really helps. That being said, I also noticed that foods I was eating had a huge affect on my acne prone skin and when I switched to a whole-foods diet, my acne greatly improved. I wash with Castile soap, twice daily and use this cream at night. Hope this helps!

  11. I made this. I love it. I omitted the tea tree, because I dont have oily/acne prone, I added rose hip seed oil instead because I lean towards drier skin. I love it. I spent what I see now as waay too much for shea butter, but its worth it. Its that good!

  12. I like your recipe...I use something a little different though. I use coconut oil, castor oil, and lavender oil. I use it more as a cleanser and wipe it off after it sits for a few minutes. I have never had problems with acne, but I have always had open pores, and I used to combat them with astringent...which never worked. The castor oil (after only using it for a few days)has helped close my pores and I have noticed a huge difference in the moisture my skin has and how much smoother it looks.

  13. Just made some tonight. Yum - smells and feels wonderful. About 30 days ago I switched to using just Dr. Bronner's TTO castile soap as a face wash and diluted apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball for an extra kick. My skin is oily and acne prone, however, the castile soap and ACV has worked miracles. Looking forward to adding this to the routine now, too. Thanks for sharing!

  16. Can I ask why these ingredients in particular please? Thanks so much for posting this recipe, I have been looking for a way to incorporate rice bran oil into a night time moisturizer but every recipe I've seen so far has a billion & one ingredients. What do you think of switching out the coconut oil for rice bran oil? I am trying to simplify my skincare routine, so much so that I my brain is currently ticking way on how to make a head to toe inc. hair cleanser that will be mostly comprised of rhassoul clay, rice bran oil & vegetable glycerine.

  17. This recipe is great, thank you!
I added a bit more tea tree oil b/c I am prone to breaking out.
(fyi- since this recipe is not made with heat or double broiler, it holds its shape which is great).
